Inspirat de un roman al lui Nicholas Sparks (care a mai scris și The Notebook sau A Walk to Remember), Dear John îl are ca protagonist pe John Tyree (Channing Tatum), un soldat care se îndrăgostește într-o permisie de frumoasa, dar și conservatoarea studentă Savannah (Amanda Seyfried). Titlul filmului vine de la începutul scrisorilor pe care i le trimite Savannah soldatului. Timp de șapte ani, cei doi corespondează intens, scrisorile lui Savannah (Amanda Seyfried) însemnând pentru tânărul soldat mai mult decât niște simple gesturi romantice, căci la fiecare misiune periculoasă acesta reușește să-și mențină echilibrul psihic tocmai cu ajutorul acestor dovezi de dragoste. Însă această îndelungată corespondență are consecințe pe care niciunul dintre cei doi tineri nu le prevede.
