The faun (Latin: faunus, Ancient Greek: φαῦνος, phaunos, pronounced [pʰaunos]) is a half-human and half-goat mythological creature appearing in Greek and Roman mythology. The fauns, more commonly affiliated with the satyrs of Greek mythology than the fauns of Roman, are bipedal creatures with the horns, legs and tail of a goat and the head, torso, and arms of a human, and are often depicted with a pointed ears. These mythological creatures borrowed their appearance from the satyrs, who in turn borrowed their appearance from the god Pan of the Greek pantheon. They were symbols of peace and fertility, and their chieftain, Silenus, was a minor deity of Greek mythology. Faun este un zeu al fecundității din mitologia romană. Este reprezentat ca o ființă imaginară în chip de bărbat cu coarne, urechi lungi și picioare de țap, protector al câmpiilor, al pădurilor și al turmelor. Faunus, un vechi zeu italic al ogoarelor și vitelor, a fost preluat cu aceste atribute ale unui deus agrestis de romani, care-l celebrau în cadrul sărbătorii Lupercalia care se derula pe 15 februarie și care amintea de lupoaica ce i-a crescut pe Romulus și Remus.
